what happened to Atalanta
One of the albums on my iPod is Free to Be You and Me. (Others include Free to Be a Family and Marlo Thomas’s Thanksgiving. There is a pattern here.) I grew up on that album, but it’s been a long time since I listened to it. I was happy when the story of Atalanta [...]
travel, on presents, and a quick thank you
Thanks to L’Empress and Nora, who were both right – after posting yesterday I did some searching and found a bunch of free PDF-ing software. But I won’t even need that because it turns out version of Word on my Mac will save as PDF (just to make it counterintuitive enought to qualify as Microsoft, [...]
day off
Typhoon day off yesterday – that was nice. I was on my own, since Rudder left for the Netherlands. My wrists hurt now, though. Note to self: spending day playing Facebook Scramble on laptop (or on Rudder’s computer which is too high and has insufficient keyboard / mouse shelf) = bad idea. And knitting doesn’t [...]
policies and promises
I wrote this the other day and then got to thinking about it. Of course the men (mostly men) who decided to scale the US space program way back after Apollo didn’t think they were breaking promises. They just thought they were making policy. Further, they didn’t know they were scaling it back so far; [...]
rowing sock, mark I
I’ve finally finished my first Rowing Sock. As I’ve said, you can’t really see the pattern well, though Colinette Jitterbug is a pretty yarn. (Actually just for looks, the sock may be better inside out, though then the cabling doesn’t show.) Rudder helped me take some pictures; you can’t really see the oar that extends [...]
Kalmaegi mostly missed us
The typhoon mostly missed us – lots of rain today but not too much wind. I think our plans for the weekend will be switched to indoor things, though. We left work a bit early in case we needed to tie our boats down, but found that not only were they gone(presumably taken by the [...]
storm warning
It’s looking like we have a very high probability of having winds of at least Hurricane Category I strength from Hurricane Kalmaegi here by tomorrow. No one sounds too worried about damage, but if we’re lucky we’ll get a day off from work tomorrow without having the power knocked out. Not that it’s gone out [...]
Two pairs of poems
Just some more stuff I’d written and never got around to posting here.
ow at both ends
Yesterday before going off to the dentist I accidentally spilled some water on the floor. It didn’t seem like all that much, and it was only water, so I didn’t mop it up. Two fillings and a good dinner later (this dentist seems to handle anesthesia expertly) I came home and walked into the dining [...]
a couple of gripes
Today’s For Better or For Worse had me tearing up – but only because I was remembering back to when a 10-year-old Liz, taking out baby April in a carrier, exclaimed about how much more exciting the world is when you’re with someone who’s seeing it for the first time. I miss that Liz. I [...]
