Elizabeth Bear points out that tonight is Yuri’s night, with parties around the planet to celebrate the 46th anniversary of the first space flight, not mention the 26th of the first Space Shuttle launch.

I always try to remember the week that contains the anniversaries of all three US spaceship disasters, but clearly I need to add Yuri’s night to my calendar. It’s important to mourn the tragedies. but I also need a holiday to celebrate the triumphs. Also, thoughts of space flight are a little less depressing now there’s a real prospect of it going commercial.
