Since I do have the contract and plan to sign and drop it off 9at the company’s local site) this afternoon, I’m going to go ahead and give my immediate boss my unofficial notice in about four minutes. I just got landed with a bunch of important tasks, and I want to work with him to decide on a final day to get this all done. (And I also want him to quit giving me new large long-term projects.)
Then after we decide I can do the whole formal letter thing.

I don’t quite know why I’m a tiny bit nervous. (Well, I do, but I don’t think he’s at all likely to snarl, “Well, fine then, why don’t you just leave right now??”)

An hour or so later

Ironically, Rudder called while I was talking to my boss, right as I was about to drop the news. (Yes, I do interrupt meetings to take calls from my husband, but only when he’s on another continent for a month.) He went looking at apartments today; sounds like we’ll be needing to adjust to a much smaller space if we want an apartment in the city, not because of costs but because that’s the size they come. (Even a house in the burbs would probably be smaller, given the size of our current place, but an apartment will be MUCH smaller.)
Then I went back and gave the news. My immediate boss was very nice about it. I made sure to tell him I’d appreciate any advice, because he spent a couple years in the Czech Republic for this company not all that long ago. He even went out of his way to tell me to take all the time I need to get things done for the move, even working at home (actually, he used finger quotes on that phrase). I realized that I needed to tell his boss right away too, because it isn’t fair to expect my boss to keep secrets, so I did that as well. He was nice enough, in his usual “I have important things to deal with so I’m just being polite” way.
So my last day here will be October 6, just a month away. I’d feel better about the whole thing if I had the paperwork in better order. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (where I was born and married) is NOT cooperating!
