cat trauma

Funny, I thought I wrote an entry yesterday. Maybe not. (Oh, there it is. Still learning this system.)

At any rate, I goofed. Turns out it was a bad idea to schedule the decorator and the vet for the same day. I thought she’d just walk around and tell us what to do; I didn’t realize she’d actually dive in and begin moving furniture and pictures around. Which was great, in terms of getting the house ready to sell, but which traumatized the cat. Cats are the original conservatives, especially cats as timid as mine. As far as he’s concerned, it would be a much better world if nothing ever changed, evereverever. And also if no one (but him) ever moved quickly.

I will swear he didn’t see me bring in the cat carrier, but apparently he sensed something was up, because he was wary all the rest of the morning and afternoon, staying in his safe place in the guest room. He did let me pet him briefly at one point, but the next time I looked in – without even moving toward him – he dived under the bed and stayed there for the next hour. When I went to get him for the appointment, I didn’t even bother pussyfooting (humanfooting) around; I just closed the room door and the closet door and heaved at the bed until I got the mattress standing against one wall and the boxspring against the other. (Did I mention it’s a queen-sized bed?) The cat played pinball for a bit, but there wasn’t really anywhere to hide and I was able to bag him fairly quickly and dump him into his crate. Of course then we had to wait at the vet’s, because it took less time than I allowed so we got there a little early.

The worst of it is, apparently getting things done early was the wrong strategy. To travel on US airlines, apparently pets need a health certificate not more than 10 days old. I guess we’re going back to the vet sometime in October.

Also, we need to have new carpet put in upstairs. Between that and the next vet appointment, I don’t think I’ll put the bed back together until we put the house on the market.
