moving stuff and marathons

Yesterday, I sat with Cubemate while she erged a marathon (in a very respectable time). She can’t make it to Saturday’s ergathon, so she decided to do it a week early. It’s a good idea to have someone there for a feat like that, for general health and safety reasons as well as to change movies and bring more water if necessary.

After that, I finished cleaning out an old desk I’m going to give away and cataloguing my remaining books. Tonight I have to figure out if I can get said desk down the stairs and outside to the curb, since there’s a charity group coming around for donations tomorrow morning. (I’d ask the Cubemate normally, but I doubt she’s in furniture-moving shape today!) I think I can turn it upside down and slide it down the stairs, then take it on a dolly or wheeled trolley from there.

My next major decision is whether to do a marathon of my own this Saturday at the Ergathon Rudder’s organized. I’ve said I’d do either a full or a half. The thing about doing a half marathon is it doesn’t mean much – I’ve been doing them every week for practice. I could probably manage a marathon – of course it would be painful and unpleasant, but that’s intrinsic to the distance.  On the other hand, I don’t need it for training, because I won’t be doing the marathon on the water this November. I’ve already done two marathons on the erg and two on the water in the past two years – how much do I really have to prove, and what is the added pride factor in doing a third erg marathon?

Come to think of it, there is one more enticement. Rudder and I have ordered a second erg – he says gyms in Eindhoven have short and inconvenient hours, and that the apartment is plenty big enough for a second erg. It may actually get here in time that I could do the marathon on a brand new erg.

I’m just getting back to reading your entries after being on the road all summer. I’m so excited to see you’re moving overseas. My family all live in a small town just outside Eindhoven. I found North Brabant to be very picturesque. I’m sure you’ll have a good time there. The beer is fantastic!
