I’ve sent letters to both my my Senators today about the whole Geneva Conventions issue. I forgot to copy the one to McCain; it was basically applause, though I also tried to make the point that avoiding torture is not so mch about who we’re fighting as about who we wish to be. (I probably ought to actually read the text in his version of the law, though, as I’ve heard it’s still weaker than current law.) The one to Senator Kyl follows:
Senator Kyl,
I ask you to step up and support Senator McCain and the other Senators working to protect the Geneva Conventions from an administration who would weaken them to the point where they become only a name.
It’s about supporting our own military not only in the current battle but in all future ones, and giving us the moral authority to demand they be treated with decency. But even more, it’s not about who our enemies are but who we are. We are a people of dreams and ideals that have changed the world. If we want to continue as world leaders, we need to make it clear that we do our best, every day, to live up to our ideals, and that we act from the morals that are our bedrock rather than from mere expediency. If we want to be able to respect ourselves, we need to live up to our own standards.
Please, Senator Kyl, do not stand by and let us sink to the level of the inhuman organizations that we are now fighting.
Thank you,

Bless you for doing that.
I have been shocked at how quickly this current administration has been able to dismantle civil rights and it’s cavalier attitude towards both law and treaties.
You very eloquently defended why we need the Geneva Conventions and why it’s so crucial for the one super power in the world to respect and uphold them.
