You know what I could use right now? A weekend in America, that’s what. Actually, not so much America in general, as in my old life in particular. With my very own car (or truck). And my own eensy lightweight boat, adjusted just for me. All 1500 of my books available. My own supportive king-sized bed instead of a mushy queen-sized waterbed. A big refrigerator with an almost-as-big freezer. Also, some more generic American things: a yarn store, maybe even one open on Sundays (true of some but not all LYSs in the Phoenix area). A bead store with lots of real silver and gold findings (I’ll settle for gold-filled, for price reasons). A book store full of thousands of books in English. A grocery store open every day and half the night, with Luna Bars, big chunks of steak or roast or whole turkeys, and Snyder’s Pretzels and beer that’s ale instead of lager.

None of this is particularly dire. We’re far from starving here, the cookies are much better than in the US and the local restaurants are wonderful, if the bed isn’t supportive it’s gloriously warm, and thanks to holiday presents I won’t run out of yarn for months or books for weeks. And I happened on a very cool bead store in Delft last weekend, which had no GF wire but did have things I’d never seen in the US.

But wouldn’t it be cool if you could take short vacations to other parts of your life?

I guess ou have to lose some things in order to realize how much you really liked them. I relate to almost all the things you miss, at the same time I’m wishing I could spend some time where you are.
