swimming in books

I went book-shopping, I we-ent boooook shopping…..

Except somehow I seem to have entirely missed the SF and Mystery sections. Rudder swears he saw them last time we were there, but they may have changed things – if there are separate sections then why were Janet Evanovich and Neal Stephenson shelved in General Fiction? My arms were full by then anyhow, or rather more than full and about to fall off because I had a computer backpack on my back. Page One is an amazing bookstore – the best way I can describe it is to say they appear to have the complete works of Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons) for sale. I bought only the third book, having gotten the second when we were there on our househunting trip. Other scores include a new tiny Moleskine (I’m only halfway through the current one but it’s so fabulously useful I want to have a new one ready to go when I get through this one), calendars for next year, a book by Tim Cahill about a road trip that sounds like one of ours only even more so (and funded), a book by Maud Hart Lovelace that’s not about Betsy or Tacy, a hardcover of Cornelia Funke’s Thief Lord that was 50% off (the price, not the cover!), a paperback of Pterry’s Wee Free Men because of the many times in the past year that I’ve regretted leaving my copy in storage, and others I don’t remember right now. I feel like I should roll in them, like Scrooge McDuck diving into his money bins.

Rudder keeps being surprised when I don’t believe him when he tells me he’ll be able to leave on time a lot more in this job. Note: it is now after 6 and I’m still here. (So is everyone else; people here generally work 9-6 so it’s not as late as it sounds.) He swears now he said he’d be able to leave early except for the next two weeks but I’m not convinced. No biggie (at least not for a little while longer). I’ve been most productive from about 4 on today anyhow. Tomorrow and Friday he’s got off-site meetings so I get to drive to and from work solo. Yee-ha.
