a hell of a day for writers

Apparently, today is the anniversary of the birth of C.S. Lewis, Louisa May Alcott, and Madeleine L’Engle.

It’s possible to prove statistically that if you have a group of any 13 people, the others are actually in favor of two or more of them sharing a birthday. Considerably more than thirteen people have blessed the world by becoming great writers. But what are the odds of them being three of my favorites?

(As something of a statistics geek, I have to answer that one. It’s not really possible to rank favorites, but I’d say there are probably <13 writers I like as much as those three. So either I'm forgetting people or the odds are less than 50%.

I love statistics too! Odds, probabilities, all that jazz. Delights the part of me that loves the patterns of the universe. The exact word escapes, but the numerology associated with Hebrew characters and the Talmaud quotes that Reb Saunders does in ‘The Chosen’ thrills that same place.

I’ll lift a toast with you to the shared birthday of such great writers and the statistical oddities that go with. ~LA
