this summer (well, winter) I went swimming

I don’t think swimming was good for my foot; feet twist funny ways when you’re kicking. Also, I don’t think my breaststroke is entirely laughable, though it’s not particularly fast, but my crawl is a thing of pity.

When I signed up at fivehundred, I set a goal to row 1000 km this year, on the erg or in a boat. I don’t want to have a bunch of separate goals, so in the interest of keeping the effort roughly consistent I decided that bike distance counts 50%. Walking counts for the full distance but not my normal walk from the parking lot, just anything above and beyond. But now there’s the question of swimming. Is it unfair to multiply it by a factor of 10? I did 10 laps last night (maybe 11, I lost count) so 500m. Figuring in all the rest stops, it didn’t take me as long as 5000m on the erg, but if anything it tired me out more.

I don’t know if I want to swim more regularly or not. It’s a good way to use time during Rudder’s late meetings, and it’s obviousy enough workout to tire me out. I like that my muscles are sort of evenly tired afterward, and that I don’t get blisters. On the other hand, I haven’t quite figured out if it will build stamina or stength in ways that will be useful for rowing. One other alternative is to take the free shuttle home from work, but I’d still need to grab a cab from the drop-off point, so I don’t think I would get home much earlier than he does. The other possibility is to do Chinese-class homework, which could also be combined with swimming. I think I’ll just keep y gear at work, then I can choose depending how tired I am and whether I’ve worked out that day. Yesterday’s double workout (I erged before work) was really a bit much.

The drive to work this morning was no problem at all; hopefully the one home will be the same, though it’s in the dark. I do miss the knitting time, but last night I finished the sock heel and started the leg. Friday’s teacher isn’t nearly as good so with luck I can get some of it doné then. The other advantage to driving without Rudder is getting to leave at a reasonable time. I’m much less likely to have late meetings or emergencies come up at the end of the day.

Also, there’s an interesting and educational discusison of the primary system and the electoral college at Joe Decker’s place.
