what I’m singing

I know this from Archie Fisher’s Sunsets We’ve Galloped Into, but apparently it was written by Kieran Goss.

All That You Ask
Kieran Goss
All that you ask me is that I remember
That I remember what we’ve been through
And all that I’m saying is that I’ll remember
That I’ll remember you

Some people say that the miles make no difference
But miles are the distance between you and me
So watch out for love, it’s not gold ’cause it glistens
And cheap reminiscence isn’t worthy of you

And it’s not all or nothing, and it’s not worth the giving
Love’s not worth the living that’s put to the test
‘No guarantees’ doesn’t mean I’m not buying
It just means I’ll keep trying even more than the rest

There’s no sadness in leaving if you leave for a reason
And the best of our reasons is to come back again
Tears in the morning can bring joy in the evening
If you just keep believing that love finds a way

I think a few tears tonight were inevitable, under the circs. But it was a very good day, closed by a good Chinese food with three coworkers from my old department (Dutch ones, not Taiwanese ones, ironically, considering the food). In fact two of them have partners who are out of town, so we’ve having sushi on Thursday. They gave me a Holland t-shirt, which would be well up on the list of Things I don’t Need, but the sentiment behind the gift and the dinner pretty much top the list of Exactly What I Need. So it’s been a good day, and sometimes tears for what you’re missing are the best reminder of the value of what you have had and will have again.

  1. l'empress says:

    No tears, no tears,
    Remember there’s always tomorrow.
So what if we have to part?
    We’ll be together again…

That’s from a mid-1940’s song, recorded by such people as the Mills Brothers, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Frankie Laine (who co-wrote it). One lyric always reminds me of another.
