the lady is receiving

It’s been a pressie sort of week. One day early in the week there wa a note from a friend about “birthday tribute” so I get to look forward to finding out about that when I get back. Yhe same day my manager came into town, bearing certificates for cake for the two of us who have had our birthdays while posted here. It’s the standard thing the Taiwan office does for all employees, but he’d gone to the effort to have everyone in the group sign them, which is not standard – a very nice thought. (He also took us out for dinner – not for our birthdays, just those of us who work for him and were visiting here. And as the one who’s spent most time in the area I got to suggest my favorite place.) Then yesterday the manager here took us all out to dinner and presented pens to the three of us visiting from Taiwan (along with a speech about creativity and problem solving: they’re Rotring pens you have to bend sideways to click the point out).

It was a pleasant dinner and I got back to the hotel after 9, but it was also knitting night. They meet every other week, so I only had this and one more meeting to look forward to on this trip. I was glad I went – actually, I was gobsmacked to walk in and see about 12 women sitting there, knitting, crocheting and sewing. That’s by far the biggest group I’ve seen here. The local S’n’B had only just started when I joined, so it’s nice to see it taking hold, and fun to sit there with women spanning about forty years of age united in their craft. Also, I like to go to get news of how my cat is doing. The coupe who took him seem to have fallen in love with him, which makes me feel a lot better about giving him away. The other reason I was glad to have gone is that the organizer of the group, the one who took my cat, had a going-away gift for me! I’d missed the last meeting before leaving for some reason, and so she’d never gotten a chance to give it to me, and forgot last meeting. So now I have a knitter’s happiest problem: what to do with the yarn.

(There’s one skein of sock yarn, big enough for one pair, hand-dyed in a colorway called Delft Blue, so she figured that was appropriate. That will become socks, obv. There were also two more skeins, hand-dyed in a solid teal color; I’d guess wool with a touch of alpaca, 800-1000 feet maybe (purely guesswork on that) in a heavy fingering or light sportweight. Ideas for that yarn are welcome. I’m thinking maybe a lace shrug for air-conditioning in a Taiwan summer.)

It’s always nice when a bunch of things come together like that. 🙂

Nifty! Sounds like good fun all around. Good luck deciding on how to use your lovely new yarns. ~LA

PS: Mick says thank you for the links and the info. I’d hoped he’d write himself, but he’s oddly shy about emailing.
