socking it to myself, not entirely on purpose

Um. Oops. On the plus side I think I have a pattern for the sock yarn I want to knit next – it’s variegated in bright colors so I was thinking something like the Jaywalker socks or a slipstitch pattern. Lace patterns so often make variegated yarn look like dog bark, so I wanted to avoid them. I was noodling around this afternoon, spurred by the Tsock Tsarina’s incredible Nine Tailors socks and ended up with a pattern for rowing socks. Only problem is now I have to knit it – so much for a nice mindless sock pattern. It’s got two boats (4+) on the foot and another two on the front of the leg, which are made of cables. I did just put in some yarnovers for the puddles left by the blades, but I can take those out if they don’t look good. There’s an oar extending along the side of the foot into the gusset on each side, and the back of the leg has a more complex cable pattern (not horribly so – 14 st repeat over 12 rows) that I hope will evoke the idea of ripples on the water.

The downside is now I have to knit it. So much for having a nice mindless pattern next. Come to think of it, if it doesn’t work well in my bright yarn or if it loks so good Rudder wants some, I have some Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in their Black Watch colorway that should work.

Back on the political front, rumors in the last few days have it that Obama is not all that likely to ask Clinton to be his VeeP. One possibility mentioned on the news was Janet Napolitano. I wouldn’t mind that. I like her. When I was living in AZ and she was governor, there were few complaints about her – that’s not an easy achievement for a Democratic governor in a red state. She strikes me as sensible and good at working with people of both parties. The only people I knew who strngly disliked her were single-issue people who disagreed with her stand on immigration, and even they admitted she was otherwise OK. I think she has a more consistent record of bringing people together and not pissing them off than Clinton, but on the other hand she doesn’t have the momentum of coming from the first Presidential campaign waged by a woman to get taken seriously. I don’t know which would be better and I’m glad it’s not my decision.
