having an effect

One day a few years ago, a friend I’d been rowing with for years told me that I’d taken him out on his very first row ever, way back before Tempe Town Lake even existed, when the Rio Salado Rowing Club used to go out monthly and row on a twisty subdivision lake. New people were allowed to try it in a double with someone experienced, and since I had decent technique and was nonthreatening I often got asked to take people out. So there were a bunch of them, and years later I had no memory that Tom had been one of them. It’s pretty humbling to learn that you’ve had a major effect on someone’s life by introducing them to something that’s become a big part of it. (Of course, that only happened because he himself took the initiative to come out and try it.)

Anyway, I won’t talk more until it’s definite, but I just got a request that made me feel very much like I did that day. Wow.

Also, I am going to have to photograph my new red shoes and show them here. They’re dead sexy, and I can’t quite figure out why (there is no effect that they have that effect on anyone but me, however. It’s not just because they’re red; I’ve had unsexy read shoes before. The toe is round, not pointy. They have a thick black stacked heel about 2″ high, the sort of thing you’d see on a (sartorially) conservative women’s dress shoe. I think it’s something about the combination of slender Mary Jane strap and the angle of the heel, really – looks a bit like something Ginger Rogers might have worn.
