The Satchel has just arrived, so here are pictures of the two bags I was talking about yesterday. (Long involved story is two entries down.)
I actually got to go rowing today! There’s a new grad student in town with coniderable rowing experience, so Coach Henry gave him my number (after checking with me) and we went out in a double today. Weh we were talking last night he sounded a little puzzled as to why Ted and I don’t get on the water more often: there are two of us to carry boats, we own boats here, what’s the problem? After experiencing the way-too-high dock and the round wind and water that are characteristic here, I think he gets it now. Nonetheless, this guy has great form (7 years rowing in France, though he hasn’t been in a boat for 5 years or so), and he’s about the smallest adult male rower I have ever met, meaning not a bad match for me (he’s 5’7″ or so). I’d love to row mixed doubles with him under better conditions.
We only made one lap, though. about 4000m. What with not having been in a boat for years and the high wind, heat and humidity, he was tired ready to come in. Also, we were in quite a crappy boat, though it was still kind of the local coach to let us use it. (His equipment is pretty bad in general; I think his juniors get the leavings from the college programs.) It’s rare for me to have more endurance than another rower, so I got to secretly gloat a bit (secretly because his reasons for being tired were eminently reasonable – he’s only been in this climate for a couple of weeks). Hopefully we can row with him again.
Otherwise, I’m planning a quiet weekend. Maybe a trip to the downtown bookstore later on for reading on the upcoming trip to Australia, probably a massage tomorrow. My only firm goals are to knit a small bunny for a coworker’s upcoming baby and to try an apple cider vinegar rinse on my hair.
