I bought Season 1 of the TV show Fame on iTunes, and have been watching it. It’s amazing show well the show holds up – every once in a while someone pulls out a huge clunky tape recorder or dances to music on an LP, and Doris has a penchant for wearing overalls, but otherwise it’s really not obvious that it’s over 25 years old. OK, one other thing: no hip-hop, not even any of the proto-rap that was around then. But the style of music they play isn’t gone either, and most of the characters spend their time in either dance clothes or T-shirts and jeans, and nothing’s changed all that much.
I didn’t realize that I watched it with my family from the very beginning, but I guess I did, because I already know all the lyrics. But one thing is a bit weird – last time I watched this show I was a bit younger than all the students (younger still than the actors playing them) and now I’m older than most of the teachers. It still makes me want to dance, though, or at least stretch enough to get back my splits.
I’ve been back and forth about seeing the remake of the film. The original ‘Fame’ is one of my favorites and I don’t think I’d like this new watered down version, then I think I should take Wolf so he has his own ‘Fame’ to be nostalgic about 20 years from now. He’s still too young for the original but this shinier, happier one might be just right. ~LA
