well, hell

For five brief weeks my close family got all the way up to six: husband, parents, brother, sister-in-law, and uncle. It’s back down to five.

We’re scheduled to leave for the World Masters Games in Sydney tomorrow, a trip planned since the last WMG four years ago. My parents have told me not to change my plans – but it feels so stupid going on holiday when I should be at a funeral. But I strongly doubt I could be there in time at all.

My new SIL would be a comfort in this, because I know my mom will have another arm around her as she says goodbye to her only brother – the last member of her own birth family – except that Vicki’s own mother is being buried today. She’s not going to be in great shape. Hell of a way to start married life. On the other hand, hell of a good time to have acquired a spouse so you can comfort each other.

K’s met my uncle. I suppose we could dedicate our first race or something. It’s not exactly the Olympics, though.

I just don’t know.

My condolences about your uncle. You made sure to spend a lot of time with him while he was still here and that counts far more than attending his funeral. I know you’d like to be there for your mom, but I know she understands why you can’t be. I’m sorry, sweetie. It must be very tough to be half a world away. Thank goodness for the net and Skype and phones. Your love and concern are felt and heard. ~LA
