I went rowing last night in the double. It was a short row, because first we had to help christen Rudder’s new boat (more on that in a minute) and then my partner had to be back in early. We only went about 7.5 km, but I was actually out of breath for part of it. NOT GOOD WITH RACES COMING UP IN oCTOBER. I don’t think the champagne (from the christening helped any, but still I’d expected to have more endurance after all the walking we did on our holiday. Some of it was just needing to be warmed up, though, I think.
Today I had to get my second Hepatitis vaccine, first thing in the morning. Since I was coming in later than Rudder I rode my bike in; I think if I ride it home as well instead of going in the car with him I can count that as my exercise for the day (~20 km total).
Rudder’s new single is a thing of beauty– very sleek and it looks fast standing still – though he’s confessed to not having quite the affection for it that he had for his old single. It’s the paint, I think; Empacher has a Model T sort of philosophy. Their boats come in any color you want, as long as it’s yellow. Of course, he’ll love this boat a lot more after he’s raced in it a few times. As the old boat was named Sunrise, he’s named this one Zonsopgang II, and he cut out a piece of the old boat (the part his name was painted on) and will glue that inside this one, as a talisman.
Me? I tried rowing it yesterday, briefly, and hated it. Nothing wrong with the boat; it just totally doesn’t fit me. I had the same reaction the one time I tried rowing his old boat, and this one is even more finicky, I think. But once he gets everything adjusted just right, I think it will work very well for him.
Over the weekend, I finished the edging along the top of my Meadow Flowers Shawl – now I just have the edging of the sides, adn then it’s ready to block. It’s such a simple pattern I can’t see the blocking making as much difference as it’s said to for lace, but I’m eager to see. I must have made a couple of mistakes, because the edging pattern repeat didn’t come out even with the shawl stitches. I fudged it a bit and I doubt anyone else will ever notice. I’m a bit confused as to how to do the edging on the sides, though; it says to pick up a stitch at each yarnover, but the YOs aren’t quite at the edges; there are a few strands outisde them. Maybe that’s for more stability?
I couldn’t find T-pins here to do the blocking; I have extra-long glass-headed ones instead, which I think will work. It was while looking for the pins that I found out that the local craft / bridal store has an upstairs section, where I found actual gold-plated wire. I’ve already posted the result of that find. (There are departments of yarn, fabric, quilting, and beading, I think the store really is meant at base for making wedding dresses. I’ve never seen so many bra components for sale, I suppose so you can build support into the dress.)
On the sock front, I’m almost done the heel flap of the second sock. Next will be either more lace ones or maybe a pair of Fetching wristwarmers for my mom.
Good gravy! There’s hardly enough boat to see. Must move like a knife through the water.
Btw, no disrespect to your chosen method of torture. The time pick was arbitrary, more about the cadence of the sentence than an actual equivalent measure of work-out to housework. I’m sure 5 minutes on an erg would kill my wienie arms. Or would until I’m back in champeen form anyhow. Love, ~Flobby
