On fat and culture

Not many words are required, just a link to the latest Knitting Daily Gallery, which shows 8 plus-sized women modeling the same sweater. Two of the women are black (judging from the photos), the others are white. The black women are posing for photos, arms akimbo, chest up, eyes looking straight at the camera; the whote women are shinking, arms tight at their sides, deprecating expresssions. (With the exception of Sandi at the end, but she’s the editor of Knitting Daily and is in all of their galleries. Also, she’s the second smallest of the models shown, but is the one who designated all the others as “goddesss with dangerous curves”.) One of the two black women is the second largest of all the women shown, but by the way she holds herself, she makes the sweater look the best.

Oh absolutely, being a large woman is nowhere the ‘crime’ for black women as it is for whites. Latinas are ‘allowed’ to be curvier too. But then in the entertainment industry it seems only black women of size are superstars. And until Oprah and Halle Berry, only in ‘sassy’ comedic personas. No disrespect to Queen Latifah, she’s a genius but she must be sick of being cast as a big mouth doofus. Halle Berry was a huge threat. How dare she be beautiful on ‘white’ terms and be a dramatic actress? Shouldn’t her roles be going to Nicole Kidman? Feh. ~LA

    Totally agree!

    She does look the best.
